today was a day

To take it one day at a time.  To appreciate what is easy to take for granted.  To feel bad for the things you can’t control.  To be supportive even when you feel useless.  To remember that someone else’s day was worse.  To have faith.  To give faith to those that need a little help.  Today was a day and tomorrow will be another.

Here’s the truth: friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, “bonus” relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children.

I saw, on that afternoon, that it’s possible to transcend the limits of your skin in a friendship. That a friend can take you out of the boxes you’ve made for yourself and burn them up. This kind of friendship is not a frivolous connection, a supplementary relationship to the ones we’re taught and told are primary – spouses, children, parents. It is love.

There is comfort in remembering: I have so much to be thankful for, so much to feel good about.  When life gets tough, when relationships get hard, when things start to change… I remind myself to think about all the good.  I doesn’t make the problem instantly better, but it keeps things in perspective.  There is always something (actually, a lot things) to be thankful for… and that makes things just a little easier.

This weekend was for…
Pork Shoppe (some seriously good pork belly pastrami with a side of mac & cheese), college basketball (a nail-biter that ended in a win), a tough conversation (that I hope will make things better in the future), grocery shopping (see yesterday’s weekend baking adventure), and Skinnygirl Margaritas (Monday off work = Sunday night tequilla).
Pork Shoppe on Belmont, between Washtenaw Ave & California Ave. Simple, sweet bbq.  Be ready for a food coma.
